Languages (Maori and Spanish)
Why learn Te Reo/Maori?
EOHS offers a Te Reo programme from year 7—10.During years 7and 8 students have a Te Reo lesson once a week for two terms. The programme is based on an odd/even year cycle. Even year the focus is on Kai (food) and odd year the focus is Te Marae (the marae). Alongside the Vocabulary and Tikanga of these topics students build a basic Kupu Hou (word bank) of greetings, simple questions about their families friends and classroom.
The Year 9 programme builds on the basics covered in the junior school. They study sentence structure and simple conversations. Year 9 students have two periods of Te Reo for two terms. One group focus on Matariki and the second group study Parihaka.
Te Reo at year 10 is an option. Students have two periods a week for the full year. Students at this level work more formally making use of the text books Te Reo Take Take and Te Matapuna. The programme is focused on preparing students to have the confidence and skill to study for NCEA level 1 by correspondence.
There is always close liaison with the local marae.
Why learn Spanish?
Spanish is a particularly significant language for New Zealand because of the important economic and cultural ties this country is developing with Spain, Latin America, and the rest of the Spanish-speaking world. This is particularly relevant in relation to tourism and trade. There are over 350 million native speakers of Spanish in twenty two countries. This makes Spanish one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. Spanish is one of the easiest languages for New Zealand student to learn.
English speakers and students of the Romance languages find that many of the words are similar to words they already know. Maori and Pacific Island language speakers often find Spanish is easy to speak, because the vowel system is similar in those languages.
By learning to communicate in another language, you will:
- Broaden employment options, both in New Zealand and in the wider world-wide community
- Learn to understand another culture
- Broaden your knowledge of other people
- Develop a new awareness of English and how your own language works
- Develop the skills, understandings, and attitudes which make it easier to learn other languages
- Become more aware of the fact that we are part of a world-wide community.
