Outdoor Education (see also Glenorchy Lodge)

The Outdoor Education programme at East Otago High School offers students the opportunity to develop skills for a future of life time learning, building an awareness of the outdoors and the many challenges that students can face in a different environment to the classroom and resulting in personal growth.

Year 7 students begin the year attending camp Iona at Herbert. The purpose of this camp is for all new students to get to know one another through many organised activities whilst being assisted by Year 13 Peer Support students. Activities include abseiling, canoeing, yachting, archery, target shooting and a camp out, along with many team building activities.

Senior students venture to one of our countries most beautiful landscapes in the South Island, where EOHS has its own Lodge based 3 kilometres on the Queenstown side of Glenorchy. Views look out over Lake Wakatipu, up the Rees/Dart valleys and down to the Greenstone Gates. Over many years East Otago High school students have attended memorable camps at Years 9, 10, 12 and13. Programmed activities include tramping, kayaking, and abseiling, archery, shooting, orienteering, rafting, river safety as well as many team building activities.

 

Instruction over the week long is assisted by Adventure Southland Ltd, staff at EOHS and parents or past parents with expertise in tramping in the Glenorchy area.

 

Cultural Activities

East Otago High School has a strong tradition of cultural activities carried out by the students and enjoyed by the community:

• Speech Competitions for Seniors, Juniors and Intermediates – these are held annually and the winners of each section receive a trophy at the end of year Prize-giving.
• Regional Speech Competitions – held by organisations such as the Otago District Council, Rotary and Lions’ in which individual students from East Otago High School compete.
  
• Extravaganza – held annually where all students engage in either a musical / dramatic / artistic performance before a large audience of parents/caregivers and members of the community.
• Choir – Weekly sessions are held in the music room during afternoon form-times and are available to all students who enjoy singing. Students gain the opportunity to perform at various events throughout the year, including the Secondary Schools Music Festival. A vocal performance is put on at the Prize-giving and thoroughly enjoyed by the audience.
  
• Musical Instruments – students of all levels can learn a musical instrument of any description. Students can join music interest groups when they have reached a sufficiently high standard.
• Orchestra – The orchestra is currently made up of East Otago High School students that learn and play orchestral instruments. It is conducted by Mr. Brusse, with the assistance of Mrs Wark. It is held every Wednesday in the music room.
• Rock bands – The music department is set up with 2 practice room that students can utilise during their intervals, lunches, and free periods. Students have the opportunity to perform at events including the Smokefree Rockquest. Rockband mentoring is available.
• Dance Group – This is held during lunchtime and is available to all students who enjoy dancing.
• Sheilah Winn Festival of Shakespeare in Schools – this is a district secondary school competition where students perform excerpts from Shakespeare texts. EOHS students have had a lot of success at this competition over the years. Visiting troupes of actors are encouraged to give performances to students throughout the year.
• Art competitions – students enter pieces of work in local and regional competitions, with a good degree of success. Class groups often perform in front of other classes, local primary school children, the elderly of the community, and parents/caregivers. These are usually dramatic performances that have been well rehearsed.
• Modern Dance – this group meets once a week to practise routines, and the students perform to audiences on occasions throughout the year.

Lunchtime Activities

At EOHS we offer a variety of lunchtime activities dependant on the weather and the season. Activities that have been offered this year range from: basketball, indoor bowls, unihoc, indoor soccer, touch rugby, athletics training, volleyball, remedial swimming, swimming dance group, netball, rippa rugby and a strong person competition.

We have found these activities to be very popular with a very high participation rate, keeping students active at lunchtime. This is has resulted in a positive school wide atmosphere as well as keeping the Staff vs Student competitions alive.
